No, this ain't about no trigger finger. It's about grownups with the background to know better getting all giddly like scouts at a slumber party over the prospects of working evenings, weekends, Sundays at 6am, etc. to do stuff that could be planned in saner ways.
We had clear indications of it in the first three months of the year, when everybody was there half again their scheduled hours to get the unrealistically scheduled and technically hobbled major project to deliver on time. None of the dozens of packages the vendor delivered for the project over something like 7 months installed and worked the first time. Not one. But the behinder it got, the more urgent the insistence on the promised launch date became. It happened, but not without utterly stupid kinds of fire drills, both before launch and in the 2 months or so after.
So we had plenty of warning about how the server move for the website would go. You want to do those things in off hours, when users won't be inconvenienced. That's expected, even though it's the web, and people are coming from everywhere at all hours. So do we plan on a Saturday morning for the switchover, knowing that we've tested everything in dark mode, and it all works, so it's just a matter of repointing the domain? No, we'll just stick after a full Friday, and we'll knock it out, whatever it takes, because that's how cowboys like us roll.
And I wouldn't really mind that so much, except for the attitude. This isn't a necessary pita to these guys, it's giddy, exhilarating fun. It seems to give them a heady feeling of energetic effectiveness that they wouldn't get doing exactly the same work during normal business hours. They'd rather be sitting around the cube farm guffawing than go have some Friday plans or go home to their loved ones. And it's not really their problem, because they're the bosstypes. It's everyone who does actual work who's poking away while they sit there leisurely tossing camaraderie back and forth and feeling as proactive as if they'd had a champagne enema.
These are the people planning this shit.
