OK, here it is ready to get the iron going and fuse down all that WonderUnder® and fusible web and whathaveyou to place the whole thing down onto the white background.

All the strips are woven (and rewoven, I won't say how many times). I had to flip it end for end once, then fold it over and insert the piece of fusible web under the black, which I had forgotten to place. Oops. What a pain in the ass it is to be a dork!
But it's ready for the heat. Not enough time left this evening for that, but I'm damned if I'm moving all of that again, so it'll just have to be good. Should be an experience to get all that to stay put in the process of making it stay put. The instructions for most of the stuff call for a DAMP (their caps) cover cloth and like 20 seconds of heat. The regular web stuff requires just a quick pass with a hot iron, based on experience, so it ought to be a scream getting it all to behave in a consistent way.
The photo is showing some of the shimmer of the silk border, but it's not showing the copper metalic thread applique work around the dragonfly body (or clown penis, as one critic has labeled it). I'm disappointed with that a bit, as the precision of the stitches from my cheapy machine just doesn't satisfy. But it's what I have. Had I known, I might have paid more for a machine with better appliquepabilities. (Sorry.)
Update: Stuck Down
3/3/2009: So I pulled out the instructions for the WonderUnder, procured myself a DAMP cloth, as described thereon, and set about fusing down the woven strips. Damned if it didn't work! The whole thing is stuck down in an extremely sticky way, and it all seems likely to stay put for the duration.
So it's small victory time around here. Except I have approximately zero concept of how I'll quilt down those strips. Because if you think I'm outlining each one, I hope you're sharing what you're smoking.
