ArtTartare Projects

Without projects, it's just a long, dusty road to the horizon. Projects are ways to engage and reward attention along the way. Beats the living fuck out of just trudging.

Lots of interesting stuff washes up, and some of it I'll document here.

Dragonfly with Wings

It took a long time to outline all the veins on the wings. Can't say I'm a huge fan of applique, although I don't regret trying it. The wings are made of a three-layer sandwich of organdy with black crinoline over the top, then a layer of water-soluble stablizer.

That last layer didn't come off as easily as the instructions led me to expect, but the water solubility made up for the difference. It was pretty easy to wash away the residue with a brand new sponge, although I did worry that the backing would shrink and leave the crinoline all puffy on the surface. Doesn't seem to be happening after the wings have mostly dried, after a quick pressing of the organdy backing. The wings are just lying in place in the photo, as I want them completely dry before I sew them down.

I'm a lot less happy with the lotus in person than in the photo. I positioned it farther down the panel than the instructions call for, and it's off-center because of how it has to work with the lillypad. All that is OK by me, but the spacing between the petals doesn't please me that much. It might look better once the petals are appliqued down, as they will be soon. I might use some color thread instead of the white I have to jazz up the look a bit.
